I didn't hate Sucker Punch, but I certainly didn't love Sucker Punch. Which is shocking and disappointing, because I was soooo looking forward to it.
It was awesome for a couple of reasons. If you've met me or listened to me for more than thirty seconds, you know I have a hardcore thing for imagery, sound and design. The set design, lighting, photography, and music are great. Combined with amazing fx, it all works well together to make the entire film spectacular.
Second reason, costuming and props. 'Nuff said. I LOVE IT. I may not have loved the movie overall, but we're gonna cosplay the f@#! outta this.
My fav SP girls are Rocket and Amber. My fav (and preferred for cosplay) costumes are Amber and SweetPea.
But. Not even those amazing visuals and sounds could distract me from the glaringly obvious 'wtf' of the movie. You know, I very easily suspend disbelief and just go with a movie and have fun, but this just ruined it—
Everything I liked about SP is tainted by that creepy, seedy-ass storyline and tired, disgusting themes.
Such as:
- a female's "weapons" (quotes, as actually truly stated by a character in movie) is her body/sexuality. In this case, these are her weapons against abuse at the hands of her pimps/captors. That's right, ladies. Just shake your ass, jiggle your tits and f*** your problems away...
- the fetishizing and sexy-fication of abuse, abuse victims, the threat of rape, sex slaves, sex trafficking
I realize this crap is not as obvious to some as it is to others. Possibly because we've all gotten so used to the "pimps and hoes" thing being made into a punch line, people just accept it as something normal, that's supposed to be both titillating and hilarious.
Oh but don't worry, didn't you see the film? These are moderately happy, upbeat, extremely well-groomed, very well-coordinated, dancing, gigglyish sex slaves. I mean, they smiled. A LOT. And danced! Did I mention they danced? Singin' and dancin', like Annie! Oh, didn't I mention? All of these girls are in an "orphanage". Hey, that's where lost and abandoned children go! F*@k yeah!!
Yeah, you know what, just ignore the ugly bits, and enjoy the film.
Thanks, Zackmeister!! It's good to see you have a firm grasp on what you're talking about when you're vigorously promoting your idea of the "sexually empowered female".
Hey, don't get me wrong, Zackarooney. I would have LOVED nothing more than to ignore such creepy and vile themes while watching your film, and maybe could have, had you not crammed it down our throats in almost every scene that didn't have Scott Glenn in it. Scott Glenn being— as I was thinking during the movie, but my friend Sandra actually stated as we're all leaving—the only redeeming male character in the film.
Ugh. This and this.
This concludes my mixed, not-too-spoilery opinion of Sucker Punch.
