My previous post was posted before I restarted my LJ, and discovered the goings on there. Coincidence!
So, I just friended a bunch of people as a way to welcome myself back to LJ. Most of them I just friended to see what they have to say about things and stuff and junk, because well, I've been away from LJ for a long time and wanna get back into the fandoms and communities on here and see what's up.
With that said, I'm just discovering this effort known as RaceFail. Whenever I made my pleas for more diversity in art, I didn't know such a thing existed. From the bits I read, it seems it's more directed at SFF books and publishing, but I'm not entirely sure yet. I dunno, I'm undecided about it, need more info. I couldn't even begin to catch up on where so many debates started. I'm not even going to attempt to wade into that battlefield at this point, I'm currently just pitching the idea for more diversity in Popular and Fandom art, one thing at a time. All I know is, there are some major jerks on both 'sides' of this thing. The obvious and expected jerks, of course, but....
Yes, this attitude is very progressive:
I just want you to know, with my degree in Whatsits, and my experience as [insert identity here], I've have read a lot, and experienced many things. And I have a problem with everything you're doing. It's terrible. You know, I'm just gonna say it---I think you're subconsciously racist, and you should be ashamed. Hm, whatsat?? Oh, no no, this is not the start of a constructive critique or anything. Nope, just poopin' on ya. I'm not actually going to offer up suggestions on how to direct you towards a better way. Not even when you stated you're inexperienced and asked for help. Nope, that's not my job. I just plain hate your stuff, and just wanted to let you know in a way that was kinda unnecessary. And make sure you know everything you're doing is wrong. Cause that's what we're here for. Oh, and also to let you know that no matter what you do or how much you try, because you're one of Them, it will never be quite right, or satisfactory. Have a good one, you poor, ignorant, Privileged f**k.
And this one is my other most favorite attitude:
Yes, I know you asked for help and advice on how to better understand others, buuuuuut, yeah, no. I think you're being disingenuous. So as always, go f**k yaseeeelf!!!
Yay! PROGRESS. *applause* GREAT attitudes here. Amazing. It warms the heart really. People who recognize and complain when things are not right--and seemingly do both everything and nothing, to keep it that way.
Good job, kids.
